Chapter Eleven

Keegan rode with Jessica back to his parents’ home. They entered the house together.

“Mom!” Danny shouted. He ran over and wrapped his arms around her.

“Hey, cookie. What’s with the tears?”

“I didn’t think you were coming back. I thought you might fall off the boat like Papa.”

“Oh, sweetie. No. Keegan helped me. I’m fine. Thank Grandma Beck for letting you stay.”

“Thanks, Grandma.” He turned back to Jessica, his little face beaming. “Grandma showed me pictures of my daddy.”

Jessica’s face expressed her anger. “We don’t talk about Daniel.”

Stella’s face tightened. “The boy has a right to know about his father.”

“And when he’s older, I’ll tell him about his father.”

Keegan wondered why Jessica objected to Danny knowing.

“You’ve never shown him any pictures of Daniel?” his mom asked.

“No, I haven’t. I just tell him…”

Keegan frowned. “That his dad’s out of the picture.”

She blushed. “Something like that. Why have Danny long for a father he can’t have?”

Dale slapped the paper on the ottoman. “Isn’t that dishonoring Daniel’s memory?”

“No. Daniel did that to himself.”

Dale glowered at her. “How’s that?”

“Danny, go wait on the porch.” She waited until he’d gone outside before speaking. “He was screwing that lady photographer. I don’t have a problem with disrespecting his memory.”

Danny stuck his head in the door. “Can I come back now?”

Jessica pinned a harsh glare on Dale while speaking to Danny. “Get your jacket on.”

This wasn’t the shy young woman who tripped over her tongue. Jessica had learned to verbally slug it out with people.

Danny didn’t argue, grabbing his jacket and slipping it on. “Grandma said Uncle Keegan is going with us to Anchorage.”

Jessica sighed. “You don’t have to.”

“I haven’t changed my mind. I’m going.”

“Sure Mayberry can do without you?”

“That’s getting a little old. Cut it out.”

“Still gets a rise out of you.”

Danny smiled up at Keegan. “Do you want to see the new Spiderman movie?”

“I can hardly wait, bud.” Keegan shifted his attention to Jessica. “Have you booked us a room?”

“Us? Like in you’re staying in the same room.”

“How can I protect you if I’m in a different room?”

“I’m not sure sharing a room is a good idea. Maybe you can get a room with a connecting door.”

“Jess, I’m talking about sharing a room not a bed. We can get a double with two full-sized beds. Danny will be with us. I can’t afford to get my own room. I spent a chunk of this month’s check on Bear.”

Actually, he had plenty of money he’d saved over the last five years, but he wanted to stay close to her and Danny.

He wondered how many people she’d told about her trip.

Jessica rolled her eyes and let out an exaggerated breath. “I’ll probably regret this, but I suppose we can share a room. But you have to wear pajamas. No birthday suits.”

“What’s a birthday suit?” Danny asked. “Do I have one?”

“It’s what you’re wearing when you’re born,” Dale said.

“You’re wearing it every time you take a shower,” Keegan added.

A light came on in Danny’s eyes. “Oh.”

Stella laughed. “So, don’t plan on wearing it to school.
